Paul PattersonPaul H. Patterson is the Anne P. and Benjamin F. Biaggini Professor of Biological Sciences at the California Institute of Technology. He began his work in developmental neurobiology with studies of dissociated neuronal cultures while on the faculty at Harvard Medical School. Manipulation of neuronal phenotypes led to the identification of the cytokine LIF in the nervous system. More recently his group has developed a mouse model of mental illness based on the risk factor of maternal infection. Cytokines play an important role in the pathophysiology of this model as well. His group also utilizes cytokine gene therapy to mobilize endogenous neural stem cells in adult brain disease models. Patterson is currently serving on the scientific advisory boards of the International Rett Syndrome, the John Douglas French Alzheimer’s, the Autism Speaks, and the Hereditary Disease foundations.
