Born in Mexico City in 1958. Bs in Biomedical Research at UNAM (1983), Ph.D. at Rockefeller University (RU; 1988). Post-doctoral training at RU and under Nicole Le Douarin in Paris (1989-1991). Assistant Professor at RU (1991-1995); Associate Professor and Head of Laboratory RU (1995-2000). Professor of Neurosurgery and Anatomy at UCSF (2000-2002). Heather and Melanie Muss chair UCSF (2002-). Honors: Sinsheimer Award (1992); Jacob Javits Award (2000); Neuronal Plasticity Prize from Fondation IPSEN (2002). In 2006, foreign member of Spain’s Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Fisicas y Naturales. Catedra Ramon y Cajal (2006). Principe de Asturias Award (2011). NICH; NIH Merit award (2012). Elected member of America Academy of Arts and Sciences (2013). International Society for Stem Cell Research: Strategic Planning Committee (2005); Board of Directors (2011-). Is on editorial board of Journal of Neurobiology, Cell Stem Cell and Neural Development and served in the board of reviewing editors for Science (2005-2011). Is PI on 3 current Grants and Co-PI on another 2.
His work has led to new insights on brain development, the mechanism of adult neurogenesis and on the origin of brain tumors in children and adults. His work suggests new approaches for brain repair.
